Motivational quotes: Special encouragement for spouse

Communication | Patience | Forgiveness | Encouragement | Dating | Counseling | Commitment

Marriage and encouragement is initiated through attention and focus on the other marriage partner. Everyone needs encouragement in dealing with life’s difficulties. It is important to be attuned to these issues and to the spouse facing the challenges. Words or actions that build up and encourage have great value for the receiving spouse. Motivational quotes, inspirational words, or words of encouragement may be just what is needed.

Understanding your partners goals, dreams and desires is also important for effectively filling the role of husband or wife. When a man marries his wife, he tells her in his vows that he will love her until "death do us part". This love is active and looks for ways to meet needs above his own.

Sometimes, however, we do and say things that contradict our vows. Through negative comments or responses the spouse can be torn down instead of being built up. This can lead to discouragement and is usually a symptom of selfishness and selfcenteredness.

If discouragement, defeat, and negativity dominate the marriage, it is time to take stock. One or both partners can make a significant different by taking some simple but rewarding steps toward having marriage reenergized by encouragement. Make it a habit to actively and regularily give positive reenforcement. Discouragement can turn to positive thinking. An inspirational saying or motivational words may be just the ticket.

Understanding desires and goals

Working to complete a project, change a life circumstance, or reach a goal underlies the thinking of most individuals. Desires and goals are always in the background of our thinking as we make decisions and deal with everyday life. Progress in these areas can have an impact on how we view ourselves, our marriage, and our outlook for the future.

Take time to share goals with each other. Talk through each one carefully to build understanding. Don’t judge. Don’t be the one to close the doors of opportunity. Be optimistic. Don’t question value of the goal. Actual motivation is sometimes hidden and may be different from what is being proposed. Allow your spouse the time to discover this through time. Just expressing desires and dreams can be an encouragement. Having the opportunity to open your heart to your spouse can energize the marriage. The next step is to encourage them to take steps to pursue their goals.

Words of Wisdom: Motivational sayings
It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, "Always do what you are afraid to do." Ralph Waldo Emerson
Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash. George S. Patton
The best way out is always through. Robert Frost
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome. Samuel Johnson

Enable your spouse

Projected goals may seem insurmountable. Working toward success may require one small step at a time. Giving your spouse a “green light” to begin pursuing their dream is the first step. Patiently giving them room and time is the long term commitment. Many times sacrifice is necessary. Encouraging a spouse to pursue goals builds self esteem and confidence.

Another aspect of encouragement is to allow your spouse to be independent. Some family projects should be tackled as a team. Others are best left to the spouse who has the vision. A wife may bring up goals that she would like to accomplish. The husband, fancying himself as a savior, frequently tries to think of how he can help and become part of the solution.

An example of this is a wife who announces that she wants to learn how to use a computer. The husband immediately tells her that he could teach her everything she needs to know. This does not encourage her. She actually wants to learn on her own. The decision is made to take a class.

There are still plenty of opportunities to take action that will be encouraging. Family issues and hurdles require spouses to work together. Just having your partner next to you is an encouragement. The important thing is not to dominate, but instead come along side to cooperate and assist.

Observing progress

As your spouse works toward their vision, look for opportunities to give encouragement. If significant progress is being made, be sure to bring attention to the success and celebrate. Praise your spouse genuinely for who they are and what they have done.

If the project is stalled because of circumstances or obstacles, be a cheerleader to your spouse. Hurdles can be discouraging and the temptation might be to quit. Let them know that the goal is still worth pursuing and that you heartily desire that they continue.

If mistakes are made, be quick to show support. Errors can cut down self confidence. The pain of failure can lead to giving up. Reassure your spouse that your opinion of them remains unchanged. Tell them that you still have complete confidence in their ability to do the job. An example of this relates to a busy wife caring for small children after school. She would like to get everything done smoothly and have a presentable home. This can be a stretching time. Things do not always work out as planned.

When the husband comes home from work he may find frustration, anger, or exhaustion. The wife may be disappointed and feel like a failure. Getting the children to do homework, complete normal housework, and preparing the evening meal is very demanding. Her long term goals may relate to children and home.

The husband can show love and support for his wife without discounting her effort. . She needs words of encouragement that she is capable and is doing a good job. Be available to help, but let her take the lead to determine the best solution. We need to be aware of when the partner needs encouragement and just as important, how to effectively administer it.
