The retirement party is supposed to be a joyous, happy occassion. The retiree is starting a new and exciting life after a long work career. The upcoming celebration, however, may be viewed with a certain amount of apprehension. They know that they will have to speak at their own party. A retirement speech is almost invitable. Giving speeches is a scary thing for most people. The fear of public speaking is at the top of the list all things to be avoided.
Preparation is the key
Start by making a list of what you might say. This will require reflection over the career you are just now completing. Quiet brainstorming sessions will give you more material then you could possibly use. Here are some things to pull out of your memory banks and some things to spice up your talk.
- Find some good retirement jokes that can be sprinkled in at various points.
- Tell how you started with the company. Add unusual tidbits.
- Share your reflections on the changes you have seen.
- Write down important company milestones that you remember.
- Give credit to the people you have worked with.
- Show continued support for the company.
- Show gratitude for the celebration by thanking the organizers.
At this point, you probably have more information then you will have time to share. Actually, your speech should not be long and boring.
From the information gathered above, write out your retirement speech as a first draft. Read it back orally, preferrably to someone else. Make sure to share feelings from the heart and not just facts. Emphacize your appreciation for those who helped you along the way.
Once you are happy with the results, transfer your thoughts onto index cards. Use large print so that you can see the points clearly. This way you will not be tempted to read word for word.
Start out with a joke or ice breaker and at the end finish with humor.

Put your main points on separate prompt cards and put them in a meaningful order. Include a transition statement going from one topic to the next. Time your speech. It probably does not need to be any longer than 10 minutes.
During your actual presentation try not to rush. Take your time and enjoy it. If you enjoy it, most likely your audience probably will too. You are the expert in knowing about your past and what you plan to do in the future. Deliver your
retirement speech
with confidence.
