Workload and priorities

Priorities | Honesty | Sensitivity | Asking for help

Setting workload and priorities is essential. There should be a frequent evaluation of what has value or importance.

Is it Wealth, Position, Family, Fame, or something else? Anything that brings a deep sense of satisfaction and joy will be at the top of this list. The list should be written down in priority order and reviewed periodically.

Evaluate the activities and routines that are part of your life right now. Do these things support the values? Is your life is filled with fun activities, but none of them relate to values? This will not be satisfaction.

A person can be very busy but not accomplish anything of value. Stress can enter the picture when important things are not being addressed.

There could also be too much emphasis in certain areas. Spending an extra hour at work may help the career, but will reduce time with family. It may make the boss happy, but it could frustrate family members. In many organizations, extra time on a regular basis is the norm.

An employee can leave at the normal quiting time, knowing that most everyone else was still working. This could make them uneasy or guilty. Decisions to honor the values are not always easy. Lower priority values will probably have to wait or just recieve less attention.

Balance is important. Don't be too rigid. Obsessing on one to two things in life can lead to burnout or isolation from others. It can also become a burden on those around you.

When things seem to be out of control, it is a good indication that re-evaluation is overdue. Several guidelines that have helped me are:

  • Choose a quiet place to evaluation goals and values.
  • Get input from others. Input from an objective party can validate your assessment of values.
  • Reserve extra time for value related activities.
  • Be willing to cut back on less important activities.
  • Leave some free time on the schedule.
  • Make sure that significant relationships do not suffer.

In life there are many projects and major crossroads that we all face. Take time to prepare for these milestones. Setting workload and priorities will help you make a better decision.
