Workload and sensitivity

Priorities | Honesty | Sensitivity | Asking for help

Matching workload and sensitivity helps balance tasks and projects with the needs of others. This sensitivity can be applied in several ways.

Many times there are others who are engaged with us in joint projects. Their interaction needs to be taken into account. Everyone involved should kept apprised of status.

Secondly, sensitivity can be shown by not overcommitting against the calendar. Others have unplanned needs that require attention. If fully booked, it is difficult to be available to reach out with assistance. Sometimes there are conflicts in time schedules. I may be asked to adjust my plans to meet the needs of another. There are many urgent issues that come up unexpectedly that are asking for attention. When it comes to people, there must be flexibility and sensitivity.

If there is an unwillingness to accommodate coworkers or family members, my priorities may be in the wrong place. In the long run, this will create more stress, not to mention distrust and disunity.

I need to be alert to real needs.

A common example at home is when a spouse approaches the other spouse to discuss issues about their relationship. At the time, the other spouse may be rushing around trying to stay on a preplanned schedule. The issues may not be life threatening, but this is something that should not be brushed aside. The preplanned schedule may need adjusting.

If the husband comes home from work and find that housework, cooking, and homework have overwhelmed the wife, He need to set aside his own agenda to meet the need.

Here are some steps to keep in mind:

  • When issues arise, clear the slate for a reasonable period of time. May have to inform others.
  • Give undivided attention.
  • Stay with the problem until the person is satisfied or out of danger.
  • Don't complain about the inconvenience that this might have caused me.
  • Inform those who have to wait as soon as possible.
  • keep in mind that who you are is not tied up in the tasks you accomplish.

Working through projects and tasks is more than just narrowly focusing on the work. Matching workload and sensitivity will account for people and their needs.
